Erosion Research
The Facts: GH’s average rate of erosion over the past 80 years has been 0.88 feet/year. Over the past 9 years, it has increased to 1.3 feet/year. Our coast is low lying and flat, prone to hurricanes and nor’easters AND exposed to significant offshore wave energy. Our geography creates a perfect storm. What is great for the surfers, is not great for erosion. The earth’s atmosphere and ocean water are warming at an unprecedented rate driving a rising ocean level and more frequent and intense storms. All data sources suggest a similar trajectory in the future.
Beach East of Beals Property: A cobble replenishment occurred on the beach east of Beals (Civic Beach) to prevent further land erosion. The private owner adjacent to the Civic Beach funded this action. One year in, it remains reasonably well intact. Additionally, the association made improvements to benches and signage.
Beach West of Beals Property: Best solution was to not act OR consider a multi property dune restoration project. Additional study is required to ensure Return on Investment. The association Membership voted to not act at this time.
