Becoming A Coastal Steward – Green Hill Beaches are the crowning glory of our neighborhood. They are a natural resource enjoyed by all and a primary reason residents choose to join our community. While we have been lucky to date and have not seen catastrophic loss of beach, we have not been immune to serious beach erosion over the decades. Additionally, horizontal beach access (e.g. ability to walk east to west of Green Hill) has been compromised over the years due to rising sea levels and rock revetment installations on private property.
To address these issues, we conducted extensive research to better understand the problem. We focused on science and regulatory facts. We explored historical trends and present/future predictions. We then evaluated various solutions and considered cost vs short/long term benefits and sought expert options from multiple sources including University of RI, State Senators, CRMC and Woods Hole.
While we have and will continue to implement small solutions (cobble replacement, education, regulatory influence), no significant action was deemed appropriate at this time. Association membership voted that the cost and risk of any substantial solution (sand nourishment, multi property dune restoration) would outweigh the intended benefits.
