Summary
The Beach Team continued its external research in collaboration with experts from the University of Rhode Island (URI) to further evaluate beach erosion mitigation strategies and identify potential partnerships. Discussions revealed a general consensus that the cost of large-scale dune restoration would outweigh the anticipated benefits. URI clarified that its primary role will center on academic and scientific advancement rather than direct solution implementation. However, the university remains committed to leading an Educational Beach Walk to support community engagement.
A substantial cobble installation was completed at Civic Beach, east of Beals’ property, to prevent further land erosion—this effort was fully funded by a private property owner. The team also explored the feasibility of establishing public access beyond the rock revetment west of Hill Association beach.
A historical review of CRMC permitting, along with extensive dialogue with CRMC scientists, concluded that there is no regulatory support for such access at this time.
Next Steps
The team recommends taking no significant action at this time, noting that expert feedback on the value of potential interventions has been mixed. However, to properly assess the feasibility of a broad dune restoration, hiring a private consultant—estimated at around $30,000—could be considered. Should the membership express interest, this path remains open, though it would require a substantial funding effort. The team remains flexible and open to future actions as perspectives and beach conditions continue to evolve.
